Free Semi Used Spiral Note Books
When I went to the UW I'd buy a shiny new spiral for each class at the beginning of the quarter and dutifully kept all my notes. I don't know why, I wasn't an exceptional note taker or anything. Recently going through them I realized how empty of markings some of the note books are. I decided to tear out the papers I wrote on and see if any poor college student could use 11 free spiral note books. They have 50-99% of their blank paper left. They all must go as one family, I don't want them being separated. They've spent a long time in a box together and have become really attached. Picture: ( Read more... )They all have the class # on the front and my contact info inside the front cover. Not the most attractive but this paper should get used at least once before it gets recycled. You pick up in Northgate. |

The "season?"
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night." Luke 2:8 Hint: Not in December. Happy solstice, then. And don't get upset at all the other religions who felt that this was an excellent time for their holidays, too. Imitation is the fondest form of flattery. |

Church with various and sundry family members at my cousin Andrew's church, and then dessert and chit-chat at his aunt on his other side's house, with some of his family on his other side (his dad is my dad's brother; this was his mom's family) and Andrew and his brother Michael and my sisters. Very nice evening. I have a few more presents to wrap, and then sleep to have; the rest of the cooking can (and mostly should; make-ahead gravy? Eww) wait until tomorrow. Current Mood: mellow |

Feliz Navidad
Well, you probably all know where I stand religiously, but boy I sure do love my sparkly tinfoil tree. I'm setting it as my default icon for the next week, at which point I think I'll switch to the Narnia tree for as long as it's cold outside. I did actually go to the trouble of reviewing the show we saw last night, "Sandy Toksvig's Christmas Cracker," though truth be told I had far more fun watching "Snog Marry Avoid" with trishpiglet and babysimon. It's not a traditional Christmas show but it did make me feel merry, as did the lovely afternoon I spent with wechsler wrapping presents and eating Christmas Eve Spaghetti. J and I are now ready for a full 36 hours of merry-making before we go to Istanbul; my guess is that it's all going to fly pretty quickly. |

Photo Flurry 014 – A Very Special Biorequiem Christmas
It’s Christmas and no one’s online, so while I have this moment to myself I will sneak these photos of holiday cheer, LACHSA-style. Two of my oldest friends, Lumi and Josh, share a birthday on December tenth and occasionally celebrate together – this was such an occasion.

Birthday hobo.
These birthdays tend to turn into high school reunions and when you are a person who attended an arts high school, reunions are pure illicit merriment. The party was vagrant-themed and there was cake and truffles and wine and amazing shmancy macaroni and cheese, and a huge dining table dedicated to one thing – papercraft!

Crafty guests had an array of paper, glues and vintage scissors at their disposal with which to make holiday decorations for a very speshul Christmas tree. I couldn’t resist the lure of the creative spirit [there was also a bag of truffles on the table] You can see the whole set here, my favorites – below.

Sweet panda butt.

I made this Krampus to make up for the thing behind the jump. You’ll see it in a few seconds.

Its tongue moves in a fashion that makes the laydeez giggle.

Piggy.

Josh-made skull. Once, Josh made me a pair of underpants, which I still wear, with this same skull bleached into them.

Below the jump, an articulated paper penis I made and am extremely proud of.

For another 25 minutes, each comment on this post will be a dollar donated to a Christmas celebration for Seattle's homeless youth, including food and gifts of warm clothes and other necessities. Edit: Time's up. Final count at noon was 577 comments, plus another person agreed to match the first hundred at a dollar each, so $677 raised to provide necessities for the homeless youth of Seattle. Pretty impressive, given the normal attitude of the seattle community. Happy holidays to all, whatever your holiday of choice may be! |

Pressed for time . . . . so, rather than post an image of my own, I thought I’d share this slice of life – of what goes on in rural Ontario in the depths of winter. Crazy, aren’t we? |

For investigation purposes, my winter quarter second class options as of today and their book requirements, plus prices as per the school's bookstore: ( Read more... )Unfortunately, my two top options are problematic -- my first pick would be the Women's Studies course, which is on Thursday nights. Just like my Rainbow meetings, my OES meetings, and my Rainbow board meetings (for which I have just been elected secretary). My second would be the chemistry, but that's a lot of price on those books, and there's not much wiggle room as they're not exactly books, but access to a specialized online instruction system. Barring those two options, the Bioethics course is my top pick of what remains, though again that's potentially a lot of book. I'm trawling Google for cheap books; anyone have any specific suggestions for finding them? ISBNs are in the post. |

Chestnuts. Peeled ones.
I have called or gone into all the big grocery stores close to me (Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway, Albertson's), and none of them have peeled/shelled chestnuts, either frozen OR jarred. Have any of you seen them anywhere recently? Am I just SOL because I didn't get a head start on shopping for Christmas dinner? I really don't want to have to shell 2lbs of chestnuts tomorrow. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I will probably be calling or visiting Whole Foods, PCC, and Trader Joe's tomorrow, but if anyone can save me some time it would be a Christmas Miracle :D!!!!!!!!1!! Thanks~ Wonderful people of Seattle, I thank you. I have successfully completed my quest for chestnuts. Happy Holidays, everyone! |

Yesterday was a good day too. We ran the last of our errands in the morning (and Target etc. was a zoo; even the co-op was a zoo, filled with people who don't know how to do things like use bulk bins). I ran over to the parents' for some Scrabble and Yahtzee with Hope in the afternoon, came home, made some awesome homemade pasta, and then crashed out with a book. :) Today is cooking day. I'd made a nice neat plan to start it yesterday... and then got very lazy. The cheese ball is already down. :) Current Mood: happy |

Working from home today - Hackney Empire Aladdin review
I am working from home today, if by "working" you can understand me to say "at home." I am going to do a little work in just a bit. I told my boss I needed to stay home to collect a package, and, to my surprise, a package did show up just a few minutes ago (thanks, irrationalrobot and wordknitter!). I have also tried my best to catch up on some sleep and started out my semi-awake time making French toast out of sourdough cranberry bread: really great, all things considered. I also made ham, sausage, and bacon, because we've stocked up anticipating the shops to be closed tomorrow. The week's been awfully busy so far. Monday I worked in a retail branch of my esteemed employers, then made my way in the snow to the BFI to watch The Red Shoes with booklectic and shadowdaddy. It was a truly great movie, at least if you like ballet and enjoy seeing places you go to regularly as they were fifty years ago (i.e. Covent Garden and the Royal Opera House). BTW my day in the office was really unpleasant as I didn't have enough work to do and pensioners kept telling me off for not being behind the counter - a sight they didn't really want to see as I'm not trained on the point of sale system AT ALL and it was hardly the time to start training me. I was glad that was done, I tell you. At least since I was in Wandsworth I got to do a little shopping over my lunch break. The next night (after work) was the Hike to Hackney and a trip to the Hackney Empire to see their Aladdin. I had a fantastic time (my writeup here) and was thrilled to have lovelybug and bathtubgin there as well as trishpiglet, babysimon and shadowdaddy. Hackney always does the best panto ever and I felt like I was 8 myself watching it. However, getting back home was a slog and since I was supposed to be at work at the normal time, I was in sad shape yesterday and not really on for the "Sandy Toksvig Christmas Cracker." At least I got some fake battery operated candles to take home as a souvenir. Note: Hackney Empire's Aladdin is GREAT. Go see it. And now - I need to do some work, and wrap some presents, and do my best to enjoy wechsler's company before he heads to his sister's house. Possible we'll all play a game this afternoon - it would be really nice, given how cold and damp it is outside. But first I must actually do some work! |
