Fuck you, Seattle SeaFair Clowns
While I was walking west on N 50th at about 11:40, there was a massive traffic jam of cars on 50th. As I approached Meridian, I could hear emergency sirens coming from down the hill. (I could not see down the hill due to the angle and traffic.) The emergency vehicle was obviously having trouble navigating the traffic (apparently due to the Wallingford Kiddies Parade). Cars were trying to pull over but there were very few places to go. Eventually the "emergency vehicle" reached the hill. It was not an emergency vehicle at all, but some kind of antiquated looking emergency vehicle painted white, proudly announcing its association with the "Seattle SeaFair Clowns." The assholes were waving at people as they squeezed together to let them pass through the turning lane. I hope the dude that waved at me realized I was not, in fact, waving, but flipping him off. Fuck you, Clowns. What if there had been a real emergency vehicle with someone dying inside right after you? Ever hear of the boy who cried wolf? You could have killed someone with the annoyance you caused the other drivers when they realized you weren't a real emergency vehicle. Especially when a second one of your trucks went by. Yeah, some of your siren sound's were not real siren sounds, but enough of them were that I am sure many people were as concerned as I was. Fuck you losers. You better hope no one pulls this shit when YOU need emergency transport. Edit: Yeah yeah yeah, sark away. But SSFC still suck. Current Mood: irate |

Ballard area vet
Hello, Can anyone recommend a good Ballard-area veterinarian that is either reasonably priced or would let me do a payment plan? I adore my cat but money is tight right now. She is acting normal, but has recently lost a significant amount of weight. She's probably about 7 or 8 years old (I found her as a stray 4 years ago). I would like to hear personal recommendations, which is why I didn't just google it. Thanks! |

I started to steam press a very important garment today only to discover my iron has developed a leak :( Do you have any iron recommendations? I'm looking for one under $40 but if it's super duper amazing I might go a little over. |

Shadowrun for newbies?
What are your thoughts as to running Shadowrun (4e) for someone who's completely new to tabletop roleplaying? They have a lot of experience with CRPG's, that's about it. I've been playing SR since 1st edition, so it's easy for me, but wanted to pick a game with a relatively low learning curve. Tanx! |

stallman and free software
Criticisms or calls for respect of Richard Stallman seem to miss the real importance of the man. People focus on gcc or emacs or the GNU stack, which have certainly been great works; or his more recent GNU/Linux posturing or interviews, which seem to me desperate and nearly pathetic; but these lose the greater context. I once read the argument that Chomsky -- whether you agree or disagree with his ideas -- serves a useful purpose in delimiting a boundary of the debate. By being "radical", he allows for others to have positions that are more moderate versions of his without themselves getting pegged as radicals. Stallman served the analogous role for free software at a time when it was just not done (the GNU announcement was 1983; Wikipedia says the first nearly free BSD came out in 1991, and the Debian Manifesto was 1993). It'd be excessive to attribute Mozilla or the Free Culture movement just one person but he definitely planted the seed. In part due to Stallman's influence, today we're not limited to arguing over the relatively minor difference of which megacorp (Microsoft? Apple? mine?) we'd like to license our computers from, but rather whether in a non-zero-sum game like software there are actually moral arguments to be had about sharing beyond simply applying capitalism. Do I believe in or use the GPL? No, not anymore. But I do believe in free software, and still have a healthy respect for what came before. |

Getting back into console
Just recently my computer was destroyed for the 2nd time by family members and I'm finally sick of it. I decided to buy a new console instead of buying new parts for a new computer since I was gonna pay well over 800 bucks. I looked at the pros and cons of Xbox360, PS3 and the Wii and decided to go with a Xbox because the online gameplay and the hype about all their games. The only thing I'm worried about is going from mouse/keyboard to controller. I've been practicing on the hold Halo but I just been sailing the fail boat since I picked it up. I saw they have hardware programs to let you use your keyboard and mouse by altering your controller to be connected to your computer. I used to play the first halo competitively but then the team broke and went to pc gaming. Played CS and CS:S competitively but then after those teams broke up and all the LANs were done I went to WoW. Yeah I know, going from serious FPS to MMO is ridiculous but it happened. I had fun competing and winning money at LANs for both PC and console but I fell into the hole of raiding for countless hours on WoW. Now that I don't have a good comp and this POS one, I want to get back in the Console scene. So what are some good ONLINE games to play other then BF:Bad Company, Halo 3 and Gears of War? Also, should I just get the mouse/keyboard converter or just use the controller? |

Oh, HELLLLLLLS yes. I just read that there will be a 10th anniversary Farscape panel at Comic-Con, with Claudia Black, Ben Browder, and others -- they'll be looking back on the series, talking about their favorite moments, and more. AAANND they are (finally) re-releasing the series on DVD this November, and also offering a mega-sexy complete series DVD set. I just peed my frellin' pants, yo. |

Okay, now I'm mad
It gets worse. They don't only block port 25, THEY PROXY IT!That's right, my email didn't go out because I have secure authentication, and their port 25 proxy is choking on it. I was told to turn that off and email would go out. I told them no, I use secure email, and it will stay that way. That's why I can't send email. Those of you one step ahead of me are already realizing what this means: They trap and re-route all calls to port 25, making you use their SMTP server without your knowledge, meaning all of your email is being stored and forwarded on their servers. For them to do with as they wish, if they wish.I reiterate: without your knowledge unless you bothered to telnet to your own SMTP server and note the greeting returned isn't yours - as I just did. NOT ACCEPTABLE. |

Fascist Internet
Okay, I just wanted to use the word "Fascist." :-) The $14.95/day Internet service here at the Mirage is provided by Cox Internet. I just looked and noticed that all of the email I've sent in the past 5 days is still in my outbox. Why? Because they block outgoing port 25! That's right, you can't SMTP from the hotel to send email. Their tech support tells me that this is because they don't want people spamming from hotels. Okay, I see their point. But that doesn't change the fact that I don't get what I paid for. They're crediting me one day. I don't consider that sufficient, and I am considering disputing the credit card charges, as I did not receive what I paid for. I should be able to send email when I purchase Internet. Period. Agree? Disagree? PS: $14.95 a day for Internet? When will Internet access become an expected utility like, oh, heat, light, telephone (free access to your own carrier, for example, as mandated by law), water, that kind of thing? |

Vegas Insider?
Okay, here's the scoop. The wife didn't like Vegas much. The Mirage isn't what it used to be, of course, and we didn't get to do anything quite "adult" like going out to clubs, shows and the like. She didn't like all the smoke and she doesn't gamble. So Vegas, to her, is an aging Mirage property. That said, when we wandered through the Bellagio, she did raise an eyebrow and noted that it was much nicer and outside of the actual gaming area was exceptionally ventilated. I'd very much like to arrange a fly-in-on-Thursday-fly-home-Monday-Morni ng trip. I think the Bellagio is the place to stay, with tickets to O and Ka, and perhaps I can convince her to let us see Penn & Teller. Dinner at the Bellagio's restaurant that overlooks the fountains, get us passed to a few clubs, and get her time at the pool and spa while I subsidize the trip in the poker room in the afternoons. Ideally, perhaps bring one or two other couples along so we can make a 4-person or 6-person group of it. Poker won't get us comped, and I'm not prepared to play the 4-hours of $300 per hand that would be required for full RFB, so I'm looking for some insider tips on how to arrange for this without being raped. I acknowledge that it'll cost, but I suspect that knowledgeable travelers can give me the education I need to do it as best as possible in today's economy, and perhaps a few insider tips to make the logistics smooth and sneak in a perq or two. I turn to those who know more than I do on such matters. (And, of course, the real difficulty will be in arranging for the kids while we get out of town for 96 hours) NB: This is a public entry. This isn't a "surprise" trip, so expect that she'll be reading this, too. |

I was cautious about a post-Staley Alice In Chains, but, man, their new single feels like home. I love it. Can't wait for September. :) |

Scarborough continued; Time and the Conways review
It seems appropriate that while on vacation I'd find time to write, right? So I did get my review of Time and the Conways done today prior to my nap. I like the free time but I'm sure over time it would prove frustrating. It was a fun day: we saw the Norman castle, the church where Anne Bronte is buried (one of the few graves not to have been moved - seemed rude to be using tombstones as paving stones), and the lighthouse. We skipped dinner (and karaoke!) in favor of eating at the apartment. It's probably going to turn out to be one of the cheapest weekends away ever. Tomorrow: concert at the Victorian spa (11), boat ride, mock naval battle on a pond, trip to the Sea Life Center, and hopefully more karaoke. |

Really, I just care about your safety...
I've posted something similar about buses in the past ( see here), but after witnessing someone almost get creamed yesterday I feel the need for a friendly reminder. :) I don't have a car, so like many UW students I bus everywhere. I totally understand the feeling of frustration and despair that comes from just missing your bus. There have been more times than I can count where I ran to catch a bus only to have it drive off. I understand I'm lucky that my buses come every 15-30 minutes during normal hours because there are some buses that come every hour (or even just a couple times a day)... But people need to understand the appropriate method for catching a bus. You can run, shout, wave your arms, hit the back side of the bus (although some drivers would prefer you didn't do this, plus you'll just get your hands dirty), or try to get someone waiting at the bus stop to tell the driver to wait. You should NEVER (ever ever ever!) run in front of the bus. I can't believe how many times I've seen people do this. If you are going to cross in front of a bus, I would suggest being at least 20-30 feet in front of a bus that is stopped and just NEVER cross in front of a moving bus. I don't even cross in front of buses at crosswalks, I just wait for them to pass. I do this because the drivers cannot see you. Yesterday a girl at the Health Sciences stop tried to catch a 65 by running directly in front of the bus after it had already started to pull away. She was probably three to five feet from the bus. Fortunately she cleared the bus and made it to the sidewalk, but the bus pulled away anyway. Do you know why the bus pulled away?.. because she just about caused that bus driver to squash her like a bug. Many bus drivers say that all those near accidents with pedestrians are very worrisome. So if you run in front of their bus, they will not let you on. Unfortunately, they don't always let you know that they aren't letting you on because you ran in front of their bus. In the past I've seen some bus drivers yell out the window at the pedestrian, but most of the time they just angrily drive off leaving the pedestrian to think that they just missed their bus because the driver didn't see them. It’s much better to be late to wherever you’re trying to go than to be hit by a bus. So please, next time you’re thinking about stepping in front of a bus or trying to catch one, think again. Thank you! |
