I have made & packed my lunch for tomorrow, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm going to wear, and I'm on track to be in bed by midnight. I should get a gold star or something. In other news, I'm watching Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I want to punch Michael Bay in the face**. These two things are very much related.
**of course I wouldn't. Maybe just key his Hummer or something. Current Mood: eh.Current Music: Transformers 2: I want these hours of my life back |

Flossing attempt
I'm always a little intimidated to post here but I am rather happy with my first flossing experience even though it isn't 100% perfect. How do you all get your flossing so even?! Must be practice. Tell me it's practice... I made 6 very small samples to show my client then once she chose her favourite, I drew a little sketch of what it would look like mirrored. My first attempt wasn't as even as I wanted which turned out to be a good thing as while redoing the pattern, I decided to make it taller and have more strands going up the one side, 5 instead of the original three. I am using 3 strands of embroidery floss but next time I'd like to try something with a sheen to it next time. I took the photo on macro so you could actually see something instead of little blobs. It looks more even in person from about 2 feet away. The black parts in the grey silk and the macro setting make the machine stitching look so very crooked! It's not perfectly straight/even (I usually have no issues with that, hangs head in shame) but it isn't that bad in person, I swear! ( Snip! ) |

Sitting in a car all day should not make one tired, but here I am. The wedding was lovely. We all had a very, very good weekend. Today was punctuated by lunch with yesthatjill and flummox, which was very very nice (had arepas for the first time. Very nice.) I will write up a trip report, eventually. Right now, though, it's hopefully (hopefully hopefully) going to be a very busy week, so I'm going to go faceplant. |

So, any of you ever play Battletech at the Wizards of the Coast game center? I'm talking about the big cockpit pods you climb into for virtual mech piloting, not the board or card game. These things: A friend of mine is opening up an arcade in the Totem Lake area with eight of them in the next couple of weeks. I hung out with him last night and he's got 7 of 8 pods working. I'll probably post more info as we get closer to his opening day. (which is literally in a couple of weeks) |

Search Engine Expert
Anyone here a search engine expert? That is, if you were given a huge database full of backend spider data, could you write a front-end search engine specific to the data? For example, if I had a database of every car ever made, all of the parts, specifications, reviews, technical specs, prices, resale values ... all that stuff, could you write a kick-ass search engine front end that leveraged the fact that you knew the data set and could custom-make the front-end specific to that data? If so, I may have a job for you. I'm looking for someone already expert in this field, though. |

Film recommendations
Community's been a little quiet lately... thought I'd try to liven it up a bit. In the same spirit as the book recommendations post from a while ago - what are your climate change/sustainability/environmental/etc. film recommendations? These don't necessarily have to be documentaries. Putting together another list, this time of generally inspiring enviromental films. |

milo and otis
i admit it, i would bet the farm that best practices were not in place during the filming of the movie. i would also bet the farm that animals were hurt if not killed. just because there's no "proof" doesn't mean it ain't so. which is why i hide dvds of the movie at target. =\ it's my little "fuck you" to all parties involved. When the film was first released, several Australian animal rights organizations raised allegations of animal cruelty during filming and called for a boycott. The Sunday Mail reported at the time that Animal Liberation Queensland founder Jacqui Kent alleged the killing of more than 20 kittens during production and added that she was disturbed by reports from Europe which alleged other animals had been injured, as in one case where a producer allegedly had broken a cat's paw to make it appear unsteady on its feet. Kent said her organization had a number of complaints from people who had seen the film and were concerned that it could not have been made without cruelty.[1] The Tasmanian and Victorian branches of the RSPCA also alleged abuses.[2] The film was reported to have the approval of the American Humane Society, despite not having their officers present during filming.[1] The American Humane Association attempted to investigate cruelty rumors through "contacts in Europe who normally have information on movies throughout the world." While noting that the contacts had also heard the allegations, they were unable to verify them. The organization also reported, "we have tried through humane people in Japan, and through another Japanese producers to determine if these rumors are true but everything has led to a dead end."[3] |

sleeplessness
I am so frustrated. I rarely sleep 3 hours straight without interruption, and tonight is no exception. No wonder I'm always tired! I hope my new GroupHealth doctor is more open minded than my last one... who didnt believe in fibro as a legitimate condition. I understand that it's not a disease, but a network of symptoms that the medical profession named 'fibromyalgia'. Every single time I use the word fibro, chronic fatigue, or chronic pain, they prescribe me more anti-depressants and send me out the door. Helloooo... I've been on 12 different formulas over 10 years, and not ONE of them helps with my pain. So, I deduce that there may be something else wrong with me. Lets just hope that the new doc is willing to think outside the usual medicine and help me find some normalcy and put some LIVING back into my life. Until then, I wait to stumble across a decent doctor within GroupHealth that doesnt tell me to a) lose weight (I'm 165 down from 211), b) get better sleep (yeah, its that easy?!), or c) refer me to psych because they think its all mental (either I'm making it up, or it would take the doc too much time and skill to actually diagnose me). Until all of my doctors can reach an agreement, I can't file for SSI or other benefits - and even then, I could get dropped from unemployment if I even start the SSI process, and poof! There goes my only income. Talk about a rock and a hard place... Also, they repo'd my car on the day that I was going to send my payment (I had been 70 days past due and my unemployment extension kicked in on Wednesday of last week.) So while I have no car, at least I'll have more money in the bank; but I'm stuck @ home way more often than usual. Time for me to learn how to use the Metro... xo |

What do Wolverine, The Watchmen and The Swamp Thing have in Common?
...I mean, other than semi-tolerable movies? Comics legend LEN WEIN (creator of Wolverine, Swamp Thing and editor of the original Watchmen comic series) will be appearing at the Seattle Center Comic Con today from 10am till 5pm today, Sunday November 8th. Admission is $5, $5 with a can of food for Northwest Harvest, Children 5 and under are free, blah blah spammity-blah... If you have to choose just one geeky thing to do today ( And there are a few Geeky things to do in the Greater Seattle Area today), I strongly suggest THIS EVENT over any of the others. Why? CHEAP! $5 to get in! Dealers motivated to unload some product so they don't have to lug it back home in the rain! INTIMATE! When else are you going to have a chance to meet WOLVERINE'S DADDY at a convention with notoriously low attendance? As a dealer at these shows over the past few years, I don't think I've ever seen more than 200 people come through the doors over the course of the entire day. It's more like a local Farmer's Market r Swap Meet than a comic book convention! Hope to see you there! |

Handheld communicator Working on a handheld communication device of sorts. The hardware is all functional (i'm happy) and the software is coming along. I was thinking.. how cool would a distributed commo network be? A bit like a peer-to-peer system. So i put this prototype together and have enough parts on-hand to build a second device after the software is finished. It currently talks to an Xbee connected to my dev box. I'm going to call it the "Zed-day coordinator". No infrastructure required. The range is limited to the power of your Xbee but daisy chaining everyone together with some magic routing should make it useful. Still haven't figured out the keyboard situation yet, but i'm thinking a 2nd touch screen with a translucent keyboard layout under it. Something that can fold out of the way. Has anyone come across an easy to use mini-keyboard? |

Inherit the Wind review; music of the Jesuits in China via Brighton
First: my long-delayed review of Inherit the Wind, the play inspired by the Scope Monkey Trial. While I expected it to be more Viva Darwin!, thanks to David Nutt getting fired for saying drink was more dangerous than dope, it's message was stunningly timely. A real shame Kevin Spacey hammed it up so much but it was a good show nonetheless. Yesterday we did a lot of things around the house after an enjoyable breakfast at the Astoria Cafe in Streatham, which reminds me nothing more than of wonderful mornings hanging out with the Quad. My later gardening efforts did not result in even one bulb making it into the ground, as the garden was so overgrown there wasn't really anywhere to put them. We finally gave out around 4:30, cleaned up, then headed to Brighton for the Brighton Early Music Festival's presentation of music from the Jesuits in China. What was particularly interesting is that so much of the concert was Chinese instruments, Chinese music, and even Chinese poetry. I especially liked the "Farewell to Yuan," called the "passe du soleil" in my program. Here's my version of the poem: Wei town morn, rain soaks dust Inn willows show fresh green Drink one more cup of wine; Past Yanguan, freinds all gone. Anyway, it was all done in the Brighton Royal Pavillion, which was good because from our seats we couldn't see the performers at all as the floor is totally flat and they weren't even on stage. Anyway, shooting off to have lunch at wechsler's sister's house ... will catch up later. |

Source for silk jersey?
I've done one corset where I covered the whole thing in a single panel of a rib knit cotton/lycra. I want to do at least a sample where I use a finer fabric - silk jersey. (Not as stretchy, so I know it'll at least need side seams, but same principle.) I also want to start using it for other projects. Anyway... I hadn't realized how expensive this stuff is. Retails easily for $30+/yard... which makes it more than 3 times as expensive as dupioni. Does anyone know of a good source for this stuff? I'm in San Francisco but very comfy with internet shopping. At this stage I probably just want a few yards each of basic colors, maybe only black and white to start with. I didn't turn up anything with a cursory googling/ebaying (will keep looking), unlike my search for silk habotai (for example). ETA: For that matter, does anyone have a good source for muslin? I can get good muslin (nice hand, not off-grain) at Britex or Utrecht, but it's $3/yard. Something more like $1-$2 for good muslin, purchased in bulk, would be nice. There's ebay but I have no way of testing the hand and grain without seeing it in person, so let me know if you have any tried-and-true recommended sources, online or in the bay area. Thanks in advance! -Marianne Faulkner http://www.popantique.com |

I see a listing for a job that I don't want at a place that I want to work. I can't win. I'm still not sure what I want to do for my new career but I'm sure something is going to pop up. I would just rather get a job that I can still with for a few years than jump into something that I will have to leave. I'm not big with change.
Finished up a November journal and I'm happy with the way it turned out. I even wrote in a few pages tonight which is a big deal because I don't like to write in them once I finished them . I'm like it's so pretty without words in it. I like the idea of doing one of the journal prop things for the month but I'm not really into that following the rules thing but it did get me creating.
Bit the bullet and went to see the Lion King last night. It was fantastic. I'm a sucker for a great puppet.
Watching Michael Jackson Live in Bucharest .(1992).. I don't get how people are screaming and crying the whole time.
We went to see This is it last week and it was really enjoyable. I'm on this seeing how the process works for artists. In the end I felt bad for the people who thought they were going to live out their dream to sing and dance with him. Heartbreaking. |
